Today (September 3rd) we went exploring Rondebosch! There we shopped for some necessities like vouchers for our phones and internet (everything is prepay here), adapters, along with shampoo and stuff like that. Besides phone and internet everything was very inexpensive, except tax is 14%. I found shampoo and condition for R7 ($1). Yes, I am still bargain shopping in Africa. We walked around Rondebosch for a little bit and then we went to Nando’s for lunch. At Nando’s I got chicken and spicy rice for only about four US dollars! Meals and drinks at the restaurants I’ve seen so far are really inexpensive, and you only tip about 10% here. After Nando’s we went to the grocery store and bought some bottles of wine that are made right here in South Africa!!! Again, only about $4-5 US dollars for nice wine! After the shopping and dinner trip in Rondebosch we walked home and it only took about 25-30 minutes, which is really great and convenient! Once we were home we hung out, went back out to the grocery store to get dinner food and then cooked dinner. After dinner we set up our phones and that was about it for the night!
I’ve also observed some interesting things about Cape Town that are different from the US. Besides driving on the opposite side of the street, everything is on the opposite side! For instance, when you pass people on the street you pass on the left instead of the right. Escalators go in opposite ways then we are all used to as well! They don’t have butter here, it is called “fat spread.” Also, most light switches are on the outside of the walls here! We have three channels on our TV and at night all of the commercials are erotica with nothing censored (definitely weird). And yes it is true that toilets flush in the reverse direction in the southern hemisphere! Those are just a few things that I was surprised by so far!
Tomorrow we are going to Reverend Rose’s church and going through the South Africa Township experience so that should be very interesting and definitely a bit of a culture shock!
